Trinity College Students’ Union (TCDSU) Ents officer David Flood has voiced his sympathy to students following the launch of a petition to move the date of Trinity Ball. Speaking to Trinity News, Flood said: “I’ve no say or influence or choice on when the date of the ball is chosen, that is chosen by the board of Trinity.” The petition has over 200 signatures since its launch.
Flood sympathised with students and noted that: “the date of Trinity Ball is not going to be moved and that sucks for every single student, and that is because every single student is affected by this.”
When asked whether it would be possible to implement this change next year, Flood said that: “there’s always a possibility, and I think that people should voice their displeasure towards this.”
He also noted his disappointment at the way this decision was made and said that:“I think that the student representative that has the biggest say in Trinity Ball should be consulted about the date of the ball so problems like this don’t arise.”
The petition, which is accompanied by the text: “This year, Trinity has decided to hold the annual Ball a week before our exams. For many of us, and especially our final year students, this will mean NO Trinity Ball – as given the choice between a good degree and Trinity Ball, a lot of students will opt out of the tradition that is Trinity Ball in order to study.”
Trinity Ball will take place this year on April 12, which comes one week before the beginning of exams. The ball is traditionally held on the first Friday of Trinity term.
