College Green and Dame Street to go traffic free on August 7

A family friendly circus-themed “Summer Sunday” event will be held in the area

Dublin City Council (DCC) has announced that College Green and Dame Street will be temporarily traffic-free from 7am to 7pm on August 7 as the city hosts a “Summer Sunday” event.

The area from College Green to the junction at South Great George’s Street will only be open to pedestrians and cyclists. Cycle parking will be available at the event but cyclists must dismount to enter the event area.

Buses which normally travel eastwards to Dame Street and College Green will be diverted to Parliament Street. Westward buses will be diverted to the South Quays and then to South Great George’s Street. The LUAS will operate a normal Sunday service.

Southbound traffic will be diverted to the South Quays, Lower Bridge Street and Upper Dame Street. Northbound traffic will be diverted via Winetavern Street.

Disabled parking will be temporarily relocated from Foster’s Place to D’Olier Street for the duration of the event.

A plan to pedestrianise College Green was first proposed in 2015 and rejected in 2016 by An Bord Pleanála.

If the current plans are approved by An Bord Pleanála, it is expected that pedestrianisation will start in 2024.
