981 voters were registered today as part of a Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) voter registration drive today in the Arts Building and the Hamilton.
Voters were registered in the Arts Building between 1pm-2:30pm and the Hamilton between 2:30pm-4pm. The drive happened in the light of recent news that 150,000 young people are not registered to vote in this month’s referendum. The voter registration deadline will pass on May 8. Members of An Gardai were at the drive to sign the registration forms.
In a statement to Trinity News, TCDSU President Kevin Keane said he was “absolutely bowled over” by the number of voters registered. He continued: “The student voice has for decades been at the forefront of leading the campaign for abortion rights in Ireland for oner 30 years, and this evening that voice is a 1,000 people stronger.”
On May 25, a referendum will be held on whether to repeal the eighth amendment from the constitution.
TCDSU recently launched its #RingTheLads campaign, to encourage students to talk to their male friends to repeal the eighth amendment.
