The first book-length study of the Fagel Collection in Trinity’s library has just been published. The book, entitled ‘Frozen in Time, the Fagel Collection in the Library of Trinity College Dublin’ was launched in the Long Room with guest speakers Provost Patrick Prendergast and historian Professor Andrew Pettegree.

The book, edited by Tim Jackson, Associate Professor of German and Fellow (Emeritus) of Trinity College, includes essays by an international group of scholars that evaluate the range of topics contained with the Fagel Collection.

The Fagel Collection is a large collection of books, pamphlets and maps from between 1460 and 1799, written in English, French, Dutch and other European languages. It was gathered over a century and a half by several generations of the Dutch Fagel family, and became one of the most important private libraries in early modern Europe.

The collection consists of texts covering a wide range of topics, with a substantial number of texts focusing on history, politics and law, as well as other texts focusing on almost every other area of human endeavor, from theology to the visual arts. It’s map collection, consisting of over 11,000 maps, is noted as one of the finest in the world.

The collection was purchased for Trinity in 1802. The purchase of the collection increased the size of Trinity’s library substantially, adding 20,000 volumes to Trinity’s then 50,000 volume library.
