The candidates for the Graduate Students’ Union (GSU) Sabbatical Officers for the 2018/19 academic year have been announced by the GSU.
The position of GSU President is uncontested with Oisín Vince Coulter, a former Trinity News editor, running as the sole candidate.
Two candidates are running for the position of Vice-President of the GSU. Dr Gogoal Falia studies the Master of Business Administration. The position is also being contested by Jamie Farrell.
The first hustings will take place on Tuesday, March 6 in the MacNeill Lecture Theatre at 7pm. Candidates will address the GSU Council on Wednesday night in the Long Room Hub.
The number of candidates is lower than last year’s election, when two candidates ran for President and three ran for the position of Vice-President. This will be the first year since 2015 that incumbent President Shane Collins has not ran for election to the office.
The GSU, which was denied funding to implement a third full-time officer in 2016, is the main representative body for postgraduate students in College. The President and Vice-President of the GSU are responsible for academic and welfare matters of postgraduate students. Both are full-time positions.
Trinity and the University of Limerick (UL) are the Irish universities to have a separate students’ union devoted to graduate students.
