Niamh Lynch, the Editor of Trinity News, has announced the appointment of the editorial staff for the 2018/19 academic year, with Ciaran Sunderland taking over as Deputy Editor.
Sunderland, a fourth year History student, served as Investigations Editor last year. During that time, he broke pivotal stories during the Take Back Trinity campaign, such as when Senators David Norris and Ivana Bacik criticised Trinity’s decision to introduce supplemental exam fees. Sunderland is also a member of the DU History committee.
Christian Moore is assuming the role of Assistant Editor. Moore, who studies English and was awarded Schols last year, previously served as Deputy Comment Editor. Moore has penned some of the newspaper’s most popular comment articles, covering the bloated egos of student politics, and how careerist ideology is damaging third-level institutions. Moore, a third year student, is also co-editor of prose journal, Carta.
Outgoing Trinity Life Editor Mary Hartnett is the paper’s new Managing Editor. Hartnett, a fourth year BESS student from Galway, oversaw the expansion of Trinity Life into a separate eight page supplement last year, as well as covering major visits to Trinity by former UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Aisling Grace, last year’s Deputy News Editor, is taking on the role of Online Editor. Grace studies English Literature and History of Art and Architecture. She has broken stories such as Provost Patrick Prendergast’s dismissal of student media during his speech at the scholars’ dinner and Paul Molloy’s resignation as Hist Auditor.
Outgoing Comment Editor Rory O’Sullivan is continuing to work in Trinity News as Contributing Editor. O’Sullivan is from Cork and studies English Literature and Greek, in which he received Schols in April 2017. In the past year, he has written notable comment pieces on Katie Ascough’s cynical worldview and whether Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) President Kevin Keane’s focus on the Repeal campaign was at the expense of other activism projects. O’Sullivan is also the Editor of the Journal of Literary Translation (JoLT) and has served on the Trinity Publications committee.
Stacy Wrenn is bringing her experience as last year’s Deputy Features Editor and Leader Writer in her new role as Editor-at-Large. Wrenn, a fourth year Jewish and Islamic Civilisations student, is also one of Trinity’s most notable activists, taking a leading role in both the Take Back Trinity and Aramark Off Our Campus campaigns. Wrenn is also serving as PRO on the Trinity Publications committee this year.
Lauren Boland, a Junior Sophister English and Sociology student, is taking on the role of News Editor. Boland, who is from Dublin, served as Assistant News Editor last year, covering several SU Councils and the TCDSU leadership race. Boland is also Amenities Officer on this year’s Trinity Publications committee. Peter Kelly, a second year Law student, and Caroline Boyle, a second year BESS student join Boland as Deputy News Editors.
Michael Gilna is taking on the role of Investigations Editor. Gilna, from Clare, is a second year Law student. Gilna was a staff writer for the News section last year, during which time he covered the TCDSU elections.
Navika Mehta is Trinity News’ new Features Editor. She is entering her final year of Politics and Economics, and is also this year’s TCDSU Ethnic Minorities Officer. Mehta most recently wrote a powerful article comparing the Belfast rape trial victim and “India’s Daughter”. Sam Cox, Ronan Daly, Orlaith Holland, Shane Hughes and Ghalya Farhat join her as Deputy Features Editors.
Drawing on her experience as last year’s Deputy Comment Editor, Alice Whelan is the new Comment Editor for the coming year. Whelan, who is from Cork, studies PPES. During her time as Deputy Comment Editor, Whelan’s articles included arguments that sexual predators like Harvey Weinstein operate because we permit them to and that the end of the J1 visa programme would be a tragedy. Whelan is also serving as Alumni Officer on the Trinity Publications committee. Eoin O’Donnell, Hugh Whelan and Sinead Barry join her as Deputy Comment Editors.
Harry Downes is taking on the new role of News Analysis Editor, becoming the first staff member to hold this position. Downes, from Derry, is a third year History student. He has written articles on how Trinity’s fall in QS ranking is symptomatic of mismanagement and why the 2018 TCDSU elections were uninspiring.
Danielle Olavario is the new SciTech Editor for the upcoming year. Olavario is from Kilkenny and studies Microbiology. Maeve McCann, a fourth year Genetics student, will join Olavario as Deputy SciTech Editor.
The role of Sport Editor is held by Cameron Hill, a second year English and French student. Hill, from Mayo, has most recently produced comprehensive coverage of the World Cup 2018. Victoria Byrne, a second year Law student, and Laura Beston, a fourth year English and Film student will join Hill as Deputy Sport Editors. Byrne has had extensive involvement in TCDGAA, while Beston, currently TCDSU Officer for Students with Disabilities, is best known as one of the leaders of Take Back Trinity.
Last year’s Trinity Life Societies Editor Georgina Francis will return to the section as the Trinity Life Editor. Francis studies TSM World Religions and Theology with Ancient History and Archaeology. Francis has covered society affairs ranging from Amanda Knox’s lawyer’s visit to Law Soc to International Women’s Week in March. Mairead McCarthy, a second year English and Sociology student, will join her as Deputy Trinity Life Editor.
Senior Sophister Sociology and Spanish student Thomas Rafferty is taking on the position of Podcast Editor. Rafferty, who is from Wicklow, is bringing his experience as a staff writer for Trinity Life. Rafferty also served as Co-Podcast Editor last year. Michael Dooley, a third year Philosophy student, is joining Rafferty as Deputy Podcast Editor. Dooley is the current Chair of Trinity FM.
Joe McCallion, a fourth year History and Political Science student, is returning as Photography Editor of Trinity News. McCallion has an extensive background in photography and videography, where he currently works for RTE, and previously worked as Assistant Director on the popular television series Game of Thrones.
Aoife Donnellan, a third year English and Philosophy student, is joining Trinity News as Art Editor, while former Deputy Video Editor Forrest Winters is returning as Video Editor.
Niamh Lynch, the former Deputy Editor and News Editor of Trinity News, was elected Editor in March, with her tenure lasting until May 2019. The upcoming year marks the 65th anniversary of Trinity News. The paper was established in 1953 and is Ireland’s oldest student newspaper.
