Trinity alumnus Sally Rooney wins Young Writer of the Year award

The award was presented at a ceremony on Thursday at the London Library

 

Sally Rooney has won the Younger Writer of the Year award for her debut Conversations with Friends released in May of this year. The award was presented at a ceremony on Thursday at the London Library.

She is the joint youngest winner of the prize, which goes to the best work of fiction, poetry or nonfiction written by and English or Irish author.

Rooney graduated from Trinity College in 2013, having studied English. During her time here, she wrote for Trinity News and was involved with the College Historical Society finishing as top speaker at the European University Debating Championships in 2013.

Additionally, Rooney was recently named the new Editor of the Stinging Fly, an Irish magazine which focuses on publishing works from new writers.

One of the judges, Lucy Hughes-Hallett, said that Rooney’s novel “stood out for its glittering intelligence, its formal elegance and its capacity to grip the reader”.
