1,693 votes have been cast on the first day of voting in the annual Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) elections. Votes were cast in the six sabbatical officer races, as well as the preferendum on supplemental fees and modular billing.
The votes were cast in polling stations in the Arts Building, Hamilton, D’Olier Street, and St. James’ Hospital, as well as in Trinity Hall following last night’s hustings.
In a press release, Chair of the Electoral Commission Gillian Kiely, said: “I’m really delighted with the turnout we’ve had so far, there’s been such a steady stream of voters I’ve barely had time to check the time! I’m really looking forward to heading out to the TBSI tomorrow to get more off campus voters. The EC will be in Tallaght too from 12-2pm so come say hello.”
Meanwhile TCDSU Education Officer, Alice MacPherson, said: “While this is early turnout, it is heartening to see that students are engaging with the elections by casting their vote. This year, the Communications and Marketing Officer and I have worked closely to try and increase turnout. It was important to us to have clear and cohesive branding online but also at polling stations. We have also incentivised voting, such as with the chance to win a Trinity Ball ticket or a three course dinner in the Dining Hall.”
Voter turnout in last year’s elections totalled 3,120, which marked a 20% drop in turnout from the previous year. However, voting took place over three days last year, in comparison to four days for this year’s elections.
