This week celebrates Trinity Green Week 2018, a five day event that aims to raise awareness on environmental issues and what we can do to solve them. This week also signifies the beginning of SU election campaigning, and this hustings, so make sure you know your candidates! And of course, how could we forget Valentines Day? I’m sure many of you have your romantic and soppy plans already made, but for those of us without a partner this year, do not fret- share your love with your friends and head out to some of the amazing events happening on campus this week.
Monday
Monday is a quiet start to a jam-packed week. Head over to the Front Square at 1pm to kick off Green week 2018 alongside TCD Plastic Solutions and Sustainability Network. Not only will this event be opened by the Provost and Senator David Norris, it will also showcase new bike parking racks, solar powered tools and the official signing of the ISCN (International Sustainability Campus Network) with Trinity taking the leading step in being the first college to do so.
At 6pm that evening in Aras An Phiarsaigh, Ben Bramble will discuss “The Ethics of Veganism”, a highly topical debate for those interested in the future of food in our society. Monday also rings in the first day of the TCDSU Leadership Race, kicking off numerous campaigns throughout college.
Tuesday
Tuesday plays host to a variety of events. Green Week will be presenting a plarn workshop in conjunction with Trinity Knitting Society, teaching us all about useful and fun ways to convert your plastic waste into new designs. Head over to the Eliz room at 5pm to learn more.
Simultaneously, Louise O’Neill will be speaking with Litsoc and Femsoc in the GMB. Louise is the renowned author of “Asking For It” and plans to continue on her path of literary feminism. At 6pm, The Simon Perry Sustainability Symposium will take place in the
The Haughton Lecture Theatre in the Museum Building, featuring many prominent speakers who will discuss how we can work towards creating more sustainable lifestyles. Meanwhile at 6:30pm, SOFIA will introduce Russian Ambassador Mr Yury Filatov, who will be speaking on the the role of Russia on the world stage. The location for this event is yet to be announced.
If you’re looking for something a little low-key then why not head over the Mhairtin Ui Chaidhain Theatre at 8pm where DU Archaeological Society will be hosting a screening of “The Mummy”. What more could you ask for the night before Valentines?
Wednesday
Wednesday, aka Valentine’s Day is the busiest day of the week, so make sure you, your special someone or your squad get out there and share some love. In terms of loving our planet, one of Green Week’s events is the controversial debate on the motion “Is woodfuel a sustainable energy resource in Ireland?”, which will take place at 1pm in the Botany Lecture Theatre, hosted by TCD Botanical Society and TCDSU.
Later that night at 7pm in the Atrium, TCD Environmental Society & DU Gender Equality Trinity and the NU wardrobe are teaming up to bring you a classy, environmentally friendly evening of glamour, also referred to as “Nuoirée with Envirosoc & Femsoc”.
Across campus in the GMB, the Hist will be hosting their weekly debate, this time on the topic of: This House Regrets RomComs. Love them or hate them, be there at 7:30pm to find out which side will win. At 7:15pm, the UT and Cumann Gaelach TCD will begin the Equality hustings of the Leadership Race of 2018. But of course, Wednesday is also the premiere of the highly anticipated “Evita” by Trinity Musical Society. If you miss the debut of this spectacular performance then fear not- you can catch it again Thursday and Friday night in the O’Reilly Theatre at 7:30pm.
Thursday
Thursday is a day that brings together a variety of interests, beginning with “Moby Thicc: Comedy in Moby Dick” , hosted by the Bram Stoker CLub in the GMB at 1pm. This is followed by the School of English Alumni Panel at 3pm where popular writers and publishers will be discussing their role in the literary community. Head over to the Players Theatre for what is bound to be a fantastic event.
That evening in the Pav, save the environment with some alcohol in hand for “PAV Presents: Plastic Free Party X DUDJ” a fun environmentally friendly party hosted by TCD Plastic Solutions, which will also introduce a new cup deposit system. Be there at 6pm for an epic night.
But let’s not forget that your very own Trinity News will be hosting Activism Hustings that same night at 7:30pm in the Burke Theater. This event also includes Aramark Off Our Campus, FemSoc, and the Environmental Society, all of whom will be questioning SU candidates on their activism plans for the upcoming year.
Friday
Although Friday brings an end to the carbon-free adventures of Green week, end the campaign with peace of mind and head on over to The Atrium at 12pm for Green Mediation, hosted by TCDSU and DU Meditation, the perfect way to calm your soul before millions of reading week assignments try to kill you.
This is followed by to intriguing talks at 1pm: Andrew Jackson will bring his planning and environmental law skills to the Eliz room, where he will also be discussing Climate change cases currently held against the Irish government. Across campus in Aras an Phiarsaigh, Dáil researcher Sinéad Mercier will debate A Just Transition: Carbon Economy to Green Society hosted by Trinity Young Greens.
Lastly, there isn’t a more magical way to start your weekend than with Litsoc’s ‘A Night in Hogwarts’, where those muggles lucky enough to snag a ticket will be spending their evening in the GMB, to live the dream of every Potterhead- how Riddikulus!
