Trinity Rowers (DUBC and DULBC) defeated eternal rivals UCD on Saturday evening in the annual Colours Boat Races on the Liffey. Rowing from O’Connell Bridge to St. James’ Gate, Trinity won all four races on the day, despite UCD having won the Goonan Cup (the Novice category event) which took place on Friday at Islandbridge.
Trinity won the Gannon Cup, the event in which the Senior Men’s teams compete and also the last of the day, for the first time in eight years, thus bringing to an end a substantial stretch of UCD dominance.
The Corcoran Cup, the Senior Ladies race, was also won by Trinity, narrowly defeating UCD by half a length.
Before the Senior action got under way, though, the Dan Quinn Shield and Sally Moorhead Trophy, the Novice Men and Novice Women races respectively, were likewise taken home by Trinity.
The Colours Boat Races represent a prestigious competition – evidenced by the attendance of Taoiseach Enda Kenny himself at the coin toss to decide stations for Saturday’s races – and Trinity’s win follows on from strong performances this year in other events.
