Trinity ranked 21st in the world in list of top 25 leading world universities over 400 years old

Trinity is the only university in Ireland included on the list

NEWSTrinity College Dublin has been ranked 21st in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) list of the top 25 leading world universities more than 400 years old. Trinity is the only university in Ireland included on the list.

In a College press release, Provost Patrick Prendergast said: “We have always been immensely proud of Trinity’s historical legacy. Our mission in delivering excellence in teaching and scholarship extends over 424 years since its foundation and applies more so than ever today. This ranking is a testimony to our world-class record of research, innovation, and our commitment to the highest standards of teaching. It places the university at the forefront of higher education in Ireland and globally.”

Trinity was ranked 160th in THE’s overall World University Rankings last year. This represented a fall of 22 places from the previous year. In their rankings, THE “employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available.” These are grouped into five areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

Trinity was also ranked 74th in the world and in the top 40 in Europe for Arts and Humanities in the THE Subject Ranking 2015-16, released last year, performing most strongly in the international outlook measure. This followed Trinity being placed 61st in the world for Arts and Humanities in the QS Faculty Rankings 2015. THE also ranked Trinity as the 40th “most international” university in the world in its rankings of the 200 most internationally outward-looking institutions in the world for 2015-16.
