Edmund Heaphy, a second-year German and philosophy student, is the only candidate running for the position of University Times editor this year. Heaphy is UT’s current deputy editor and has previously worked as the paper’s creative director and as a senior writer in their magazine. He is also this year’s layout editor for Icarus. Outside of student journalism, Heaphy is a coordinator with the Voluntary Tuition Programme and the captain of Trinity’s German debating team.
If elected, he plans to concentrate on providing up-to-date online content, increasing advertising revenue and establishing more clearly defined aims for each section of the paper, as well as improving UT’s staffing structure. He also hopes to oversee the introduction of a weekly University Times podcast and Radius, a new pullout segment in the paper and dedicated section of the website focused on coverage of society life.
