Professor Sinéad Ryan appointed Dean of Research

Ryan takes over from outgoing Dean of Research Professor Wolfgang Schmitt

Professor Sinéad Ryan has been appointed as Dean of Research, replacing Professor Wolfgang Schmitt.

The appointment was announced by Provost Linda Doyle in an email this afternoon. It was approved by the College Board at its monthly meeting this week. Ryan is Professor of Theoretical High Energy Physics in the School of Mathematics where she previously served as Head of School.

On the appointment, the Provost said: “Sinéad has a significant track record in issues relating to research and is well positioned to take on this responsibility. I want to wish Sinéad well in this role.”

Doyle thanked outgoing Dean of Research Wolfgang Schmitt for his “dedicated service”.

“During Wolfgang’s time as Dean, he oversaw major restructuring of Trinity Research and is now returning to his own research, having been awarded a significant research grant. Congratulations, Wolfgang, and thank you sincerely,” she said.

In December of 2022 Ryan was appointed to the Irish Research Council (IRC) by Minister Harris. Her research is in the area of high energy particle physics and with a focus on quantum chromodynamics.

She is chair of the EuroHPC Infrastructure Advisory Group, and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Ryan has also held Distinguished Visiting Professorships at the Institute for Advanced Study at the Technische Universität München in Germany and Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in France.

In February 2016, Ryan was one of eight Trinity academics honoured by President Micheal D. Higgins for their contributions to scientific research in a celebration of women in science.
