A Last Minute Summer To-Do List

Whether you’ve spent the last few months in Ireland praying for some sun or travelling through warmer climates, we can all agree the longer days are something to cherish. I’ve rounded up a comprehensive list of activities and outings that you may not have gotten around to.”

As college starts back up next month, cloud cover will soon begin to intensify, days will get shorter, and a chill will enter the air. Some, like myself, relish the prospect of cosy Autumn evenings, but it is important that we soak up the last of this typical Irish summer. Whether you’ve spent the last few months in Ireland praying for some sun or travelling through warmer climates, we can all agree the longer days are something to cherish. I have, therefore, rounded up a comprehensive list of activities and outings that you may not have gotten around to. Use the next few weeks to revel in the late summer sunshine and make the most of all your city or locality has to offer.

Host a BBQ

Invite your friends over, pull out the old forgotten grill, and pop the bubbles. Aperols, Hugo’s, and Limoncello Spritzes provide the perfect send off to the summer season. You can pick a theme, make it a potluck, or just do picky bits. Whatever you decide, a great night will be had when there are spritzes involved!

Go on a hike

Get the DART to Skerries and walk the coastal trail. Treat yourself with an ice-cream at the harbour wall. The Dublin Mountains offer varying terrains for the beginner and the more experienced hiker. Wherever you live, find your nearest hiking trail or sea walk, a friend or two, and take to the trail. You could even pack a picnic and have lunch when you reach the summit or get too hungry to go on. It is rare during Michaelmas or Hilary term that we can spend time in nature without the threat of rain. Mid-August is the perfect time to enjoy all that the natural landscape around you has to offer. But that’s not to say that you shouldn’t bring  your raincoat, especially if you are in Ireland.

Concerts

Did not get to go to the Era’s Tour this summer? Could not manage to get Coldplay tickets? Not to worry, there is more to life than stadium tours (kind of). Get on to Ticketmaster and see what’s on near you. You will be surprised by what you find. Tickets are generally very good value, leaving you enough to spend on overpriced food and drink! Even if it is not your favourite artist, you really cannot beat a summertime concert. Girl In Red is playing the 3 Arena on the 27th August and tickets are not yet sold out!

See a Film

If you’re around the Dublin area, drive or take the DART to the outdoor cinema at Malahide Castle. If you are not in the Dublin area, google your nearest one. They make for a great night and all from the comfort of your car. Bring your own snacks and drinks to avoid paying through the nose! Alternatively, if you prefer the comfort of a roof over your head and a cushy seat, take a trip to The Lighthouse cinema in Smithfield.

Theatre

While it is not necessarily a summer activity, for evenings where the summer weather has not lived up to expectations, your local theatre offers wisdom and entertainment in equal measure. The Gate is currently running Dancing at Lughnasa by the great Brian Friel until mid-September. Take it from me, it is a must see.

Volunteer

There are so many charities desperate for any help they can get around Dublin or wherever you may be spending your summer. Whether it is handing out vital supplies to those sleeping rough or getting stuck into administrative work, there is always something you can offer. Contact charities like Womens Aid, the DSPCA, ISPCC, Simon Community or The Capuchin Day Centre. If you have the time to spare between work and making the most of the summer holidays, try your hand at volunteering for any number of local organisations.

Farmers Market’s

There are farmers and antique Markets in pretty much every town or village, multiple if you live close to the city. Grab a bag, or a woven tote if you’re really feeling it, and wander around the stalls. Pick up a few olives and some heirloom tomatoes for your BBQ. Markets are great for people watching over a coffee and cinnamon bun. Copious amounts of free samples mean you don’t even need to spend a penny to enjoy the atmosphere and return home well fed!

Museums and Galleries

The National Gallery is currently running an interesting exhibit on Women Impressionists until early October. If you have a Thursday evening to spare tickets are discounted to €5. IMMA has a summer long schedule of events from seminars to music in their courtyard. The Hugh Lane ‘After Hours’ events run until late August and feature exhibits, talks, and food and drink for the low, low price of…wait, it’s free admission!

Take the Train

Kilkenny, Athlone, Cork, Belfast, and Dalkey. These cities and towns, along with many others, are the perfect locations for a day trip on the train. Finish your summer reading on the journey there and take in the beautiful scenery. Once you’ve arrived, there is always plenty to do and see. Visit the English Market in Cork city. Kilkenny Castle and the Butler Gallery are only a short walk from the train station.

When college starts back up and you are buried in assignments and readings, it will not sting as much knowing you made the most of your summer. There is always something during the college year we would like to get around to but never do. Now is the time. Try that new micro bakery, drive to that diving spot, read that book, or watch that movie. Life is short, especially when you are a student who has assignments getting in the way. You will be glad you did it!
