All college libraries reopen following weekend of turbulence

A spokesperson for college has apologised for any inconvenience caused

All college libraries have reopened today following a weekend of turbulence, a spokesperson from college has confirmed.

The library complex which consists of the Ussher, Lecky and former Berkeley libraries, was forced to close over the weekend due to an electrical fault.

On X/Twitter, the College library confirmed that the Ussher had “been experiencing intermittent electrical issues” resulting in the closure, and that power has been restored while “engineers continue to work on the root cause”.

Trinity News understands that students in the library at the time of closure were relocated to the Hamilton Library.

Reportedly, the electrical issue also caused the temporary closure of the Old Library, affecting tourists.

On Saturday at 3pm the first floor of Kinsella Hall reopened, however Trinity News understands that it closed once more on Sunday.

Speaking about the closures on social media, Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) President Jenny Maguire criticised college for “spending millions on new facilities while our current spaces crumble,” adding that students and staff should be prioritised more than “flashy builds”.

“Though new research and library space is welcome, it is vital that the current structures are not actively going to shit.”

“The library team do amazing work – college must act to reflect this,” she added.

In a statement to Trinity News a spokesperson for college said: “We are reviewing the issues experienced over the weekend. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to users”.
