On the Thursday of Freshers’ Week, Trinity College’s historic Front Square became the stage for an exhilarating fencing demonstration, courtesy of the Trinity Fencing Club. The event drew a diverse audience of students, professors, and even passing Trinity Trails groups, all pausing to witness the fast-paced action taking place in front of the Exam Hall
The skill, precision, and elegance on display were nothing short of impressive. The fencers, clad in their protective gear, lunged, parried, and executed lightning-fast attacks with remarkable agility. Each well-placed “touché” was signalled by the beep of the electronic scoring machine. Each bout was a captivating spectacle, showcasing the grace and strategy required in this ancient and sophisticated sport.
For this writer, experiencing fencing live for the first time was a mesmerising and eye-opening experience, offering a glimpse into a sport that, while niche, is filled with passion and artistry.
Before the final bout, Vice-Captain Cathal Maguire announced that beginner training sessions would take place every Monday and Friday, encouraging all to get involved and try this beautiful sport for themselves. It was truly a fantastic display of fencing at its finest.
