Taoiseach announces general election for end of November

Taoiseach Simon Harris will ask the President to dissolve the Dáil this Friday

Taoiseach Simon Harris has announced that a general election will take place on Friday, November 29.

Speaking on RTÉ News this evening, the Taoiseach announced that he will travel to Áras an Uachtaráin on Friday to ask President Michael D. Higgins to dissolve the Dáil.

Once the Dáil is dissolved, Minister for Housing and Local Government Darragh O’Brien will officially call an election for November 29, kicking off a three week long campaign period.

Harris announced that a general election would take place before the end of the year last month leading to weeks of speculation regarding the date.

Speaking on RTÉ News following the announcement Harris said the government wanted to pass the Finance Bill prior to dissolving the Dáil.

“We don’t want to be knocking on people’s doors until we have tax cuts actually passed into law,” he said.

“It’s my intention then to seek dissolution of the Dáil by President Higgins on Friday and as I would have discussed with the other coalition leaders, it’s my hope that we will have polling day in this country on the 29th of November.”

“I’m looking forward to the weeks ahead and I’m asking the people of Ireland for a mandate,” he added.
