Clonan and Ruane re-elected to Trinity Seanad seats, while Chu requests recount

Aubrey McCarthy currently leads Hazel Chu by 31 votes for the third and final seat

Independent Senators Tom Clonan and Lynn Ruane have retained their seats in Trinity’s three-seat Seand constituency.

A recount is currently underway, to decide the third and final seat.

Last night, Green Party candidate Hazel Chu requested a full recount after placing just 31 votes behind Independent candidate Aubrey McCarthy in the 15th count. Counting was subsequently suspended until 9.30am this morning at which time Chu’s request was to be reviewed.

The 15th count saw the distribution of Hugo MacNeil’s votes.

After receiving 944 transfers from MacNeill bringing her to a total of 3,741 votes, McCarthy overtook Chu who received 547 of MacNeill’s transfers, for a total of 3,710.

Ruane, who topped the poll receiving 3,761 first preference votes, was elected in the 11th count after exceeding the quota.

Clonan was subsequently elected in the 13th count.
