Helen Tyrrell drops out of ents race

Previously the most contested position, four candidates now remain in the ents race

Helen Tyrrell has dropped out of the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) sabbatical elections.

The entertainments officer (ents) race began with a total of six candidates, and it is now down to four.

In a statement to Trinity News explaining her departure from the race, Tyrrell said: “I basically was just very conscious that I didn’t want, the more I was getting into the campaign it to be affecting my roles and my responsibilities within VDP.”

Tyrrell is currently serving as the vice president of fundraising at Trinity St. Vincent de Paul (VDP). She noted that with the upcoming Raise and Give (RAG) Week, which is a main focus of her role in VDP, she wanted to ensure that her campaign wasn’t “taking away from [her] current job”.

She continued: “I just felt like the more and more I was planning and the more organizing I was doing of allocating my time into the campaigning, I felt like I was taking it away from what I really wanted to do, which was VDP stuff.”

She also cited the stress of final year coursework and dissertation work as a reason for her decision to drop out of the race. Tyrrell is a senior sophister student of business and French.

Tyrrell highlighted that she had a very positive experience and enjoyed being in the race. She also emphasized that there is “so much support within SU and the EC,” which added to her positive experience of the race and the other candidates.

The remaining four candidates running for entertainments officer are Yuv Garg, Finn Hallwood, Orla Norton, and John O’Hara.
