LawSoc to honour former PM Theresa May in ceremony next week

The society will present the Praeses Elit award to the former Conservative Party leader

DU Law Society (LawSoc) has announced that former UK Prime Minister Theresa May will visit the society next Thursday, February 27.

In a post on Instagram the society revealed that May will receive the Praeses Elit award, which recognises “those who have advocated for a fairer and more just world, and those who have advanced discourse in their field”.

“There are few who meet this metric as well as Theresa May,” the post said.

“From her political career where she has advocated for progressive advancement in LGBT+ policy, and workers rights, to her role as an advocate in her mission to end modern-day slavery she has proven herself to be an outspoken advocate for a better world.”

“This event will be a unique opportunity to hear about her life and career in her own words,” it concluded.

May succeeded David Cameron as prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party from 2016 to 2019, overseeing much of the fallout and negotiations following the Brexit referendum in 2016. She was the second ever female prime minister, and previously served as home secretary from 2010 to 2016.

May was elevated to the House of Lords as Baroness May of Maidenhead in August after stepping down from her seat in the general election.

Other recipients of the Praeses Elit this year have included rap group Kneecap, double Olympic boxing gold medalist Kellie Harrington and former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

Last week it was presented to activist Natasha O’Brien, in recognition of the “immense bravery [of her] outspoken fight for justice” after she was violently attacked by a member of the armed forces in 2022.
