Second time lucky: Hastings prevails in University Times editor election

Hastings will take over from former election rival Brídín Ní Fhearraigh-Joyce this summer

In the first sabbatical election result of the night, Charlie Hastings has been elected the next editor of the University Times on the first count.

In his second bid for the position, Hastings was elected with 57.48% of valid ballots, winning out against Sajal Singh who received 31.29%. The option to re-open nominations (RON) received 9.55%.

Speaking following his election, Hastings thanked his girlfriend and campaign manager Laura Stafford, as well as Singh “for putting up such a good race”.

A year ago, Hastings was defeated narrowly by Brídín Ní Fhearraigh-Joyce in the election for the position.

Speaking tonight, he said: “This time last year I was standing in this building and I got some very bad news.”

“I hope this shows everyone who walks home disappointed tonight that it’s not the end. Get up and try again, it’s not the end.”

Polling by Trinity News predicted a comfortable win for Hastings, receiving the support of two thirds of likely voters in the first week of campaigning, having run on a platform emphasising the welfare of staff, and the revival of the paper’s magazine.
