Dublin’s best new pizza restaurant?

Nicolle Riley reviews Reggie’s Pizza in Rathmines

Nestled in Rathmines is Dublin’s newest pizzeria, which has become one of the city’s busiest restaurants since opening in December, making it difficult to secure a reservation for good reason. The owner, Reggie White, already had a reputation for good pizza having been the founder and owner of Pi.

Reggie’s clearly takes the top spot”

The menu at Reggie’s is simple yet typical for a pizzeria, featuring appetisers, a few salads, and of course, pizzas. While Dublin boasts a variety of excellent pizza places, each offering different styles and flavors, after visiting Reggie’s and trying the pizza, I felt compelled to reevaluate my Dublin pizza rankings. Reggie’s clearly takes the top spot.

As you walk in, your eyes are immediately drawn to the warm lighting and open windows that allow you to see the kitchen in action from the outside. The high ceiling is a standout feature. You wouldn’t fully appreciate its significance without exploring the website, where you can learn about the special acoustic treatment installed. This design allows diners to converse easily across the table while enjoying the music, eliminating the need to shout.

You can likely order almost anything on this menu from the mozzarella sticks to the arancini and it will be delicious. If you decide to order a starter though, it must be the ricotta meatballs served with homemade focaccia. The homemade focaccia truly enhances the flavor of the meatballs, making it the perfect starter for a group, as everyone can enjoy a dollop of the meatball and sauce on the warm bread.

The pizza selection at Reggie’s is impressive, featuring lots of classic twists on everyone’s favorite pizzas alongside some unique and equally delicious varieties. One standout is the bacon, pineapple, and jalapeño pizza, which offers a refreshing twist on the nostalgic combination of pineapple and ham. The margarita pizza is particularly cheesy and is perfect for cheese lovers who appreciate a simple yet flavourful pie.

Another highlight is the nduja pizza, topped with ricotta and honey. This pizza strikes a delightful balance between sweet and salty, with the creaminess of the ricotta tying everything together beautifully, especially when paired with the garlic and herb dip. I already can’t wait to have this pizza again.

No pizzeria is complete without a take on pepperoni, and Reggie’s version impresses with thick cuts of salami and pickled chillies, adding a spicy kick to this classic favourite. The sausage, stracciatella, and chilli pizza is another flavorful option that still keeps things basic for those who prefer a familiar order. The addition of capers gives this sausage pizza an extra salty bite, which is even better when drizzled with some of their hot honey.

Ultimately, what makes Reggie’s an outstanding pizza place is the fluffy sourdough crust. It has the perfect balance of crispness, allowing the slices to hold their shape while offering a nice charred flavor. No matter what type of pizza you order, the crust itself is enough to blow you away.

Overall, Reggie’s highly anticipated opening has surpassed my expectations for pizza in Dublin, making it the perfect spot for group dinners and generous portions when you’re feeling hungry. It’s advisable to order a few pies to share, along with some appetizers. But, even ordering just pizzas, which range from 12 to 18, proves to be a good value for how many mouths they can feed.

They burned the margarita pizza and had to cook me a new one”

Although I visited Reggie’s on a Monday night at 8:30 PM (the only reservation I could secure within three days), it was an experience filled with its ups and downs, to say the least. Did the pizzas take over 45 minutes to arrive? Yes. Not to mention that they burned the margarita pizza and had to cook me a new one. Meanwhile, the appetizers awkwardly came out at the same time as the pies, which was far from ideal.

Despite these typical challenges faced by a new restaurant, I would happily return. It is evident that each pizza is crafted with care and uses top-notch ingredients. Perhaps my excitement for the food was heightened by the excruciatingly long wait, but I’m willing to believe that contributed to the overall delicious experience. These initial operational issues are expected with any new restaurant so I am happy to cut Reggie’s some slack for my first-time visit, and with another month under their wing they will have sorted out these hiccups.

Getting a reservation on weekends might feel nearly impossible since it tends to be quite busy, but that just speaks to the deliciousness of the pizza. The atmosphere at Reggie’s is lively, with comfortable music playing, creating a friendly vibe that’s perfect for unwinding and catching up with friends over a bottle of wine. Once you give Reggie’s a chance, it’s sure to become your go-to pizza when you’re in dire need of a pizza-craving cure.
