TCDSU to conduct “intensive” campaign for lower rent prices

A motion to place pressure on College to lower rent prices passed at this week’s council meeting

Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) have passed a motion demanding a “meaningful commitment” by College to make accommodation more affordable .

The motion mandates that the TCDSU President and the Housing Rights Officer “conduct an intensive campaign to pressure college into lowering rent prices”.

The motion acknowledged the achievements obtained by the union in recent years regarding rent. Most notably the Book of Kells blockade in September 2023.

The motion also highlighted the “work of the campaigns committee over recent weeks in the planning of the rent freeze campaign that extended a rent freeze for another academic year”.

Earlier this week a spokesperson for College told Trinity News: “There is no plan – nor will there be a plan – to increase rent for the academic year 2025/2026. “

“The suggestion that there is a proposed plan to increase rent for the academic year 2025/2026 is incorrect.”

Despite these wins, TCDSU maintains that “the rent is still too high”.

“One-off commitments from the university do not go far enough, and a meaningful commitment by the university for affordable accommodation is needed,” the motion read.

The motion was proposed by TCDSU president Jenny Maguire and seconded by Class Representative Harry Johnstone.
