72 new scholars announced amid Trinity Monday celebrations

37 new fellows, eight professorial fellows and two honorary fellows were also named at the Trinity Monday ceremony

72 new scholars have been announced by the provost this morning, kicking off Trinity Monday celebrations for 2025.

There were scenes of both celebration and disappointment in Front Square as Provost Linda Doyle read the names of successful candidates from the steps of the Exam Hall.

The number of new scholars has remained consistent with last year, when 72 were also announced, an increase of 11 from 2023.

In addition to scholars, Doyle named 37 new fellows from among the university’s academic staff, as well as eight professorial fellows and two honorary fellows.

“On behalf of the Trinity community, I offer my warmest congratulations to everyone who has been elected to fellowship and scholarship,” Doyle said.

“These are fantastic academic achievements and the new fellows and scholars deserve to feel very proud today.”

“I also want to commend everyone who sat the ‘schols’ exams and everyone who put their name forward for Fellowship. That commitment and courage reflect the very best of our community.”

Comhghairdeas ó chroí libh.”

Touted as the most prestigious undergraduate award in the country, “schols” comes with a range of benefits: scholars receive free tuition (or a fee reduction equivalent to the rate paid by EU students), free College accommodation, and can dine for free at Commons every weekday.

Dr Kerry Houston, who has been director of chapel music in College since 1987, and Professor Ed Hawkins, deputy director of the Climate + Co-Centre, were elected to honorary fellowship.

The staff members elected fellows are Alessio Benavoli, Goetz Botterweck, Melanie Bouroche, Aibhín Bray, John Bosco Conama, Gavin Davey, Elaine Uí Dhonnchadha, John Dinsmore, Gemma Donnelly-Cox, Jude Lal Fernando, Breiffni Fitzgerald, Geraldine Foley, Nathan Hill, Patrick Houlihan, Mary Hughes, Ashish Kumar Jha, Eva Jimenez-Mateos, David Lewis, Andrew Loxley, Ronan Lyons, Daniel Malan, Catherine McCabe, Simone McCaughren, Andrea Mulligan, Gavin Murphy, Susan P.
