Trinity News has swept up 21 nominations across 15 categories in the National Student Media Awards (Smedias) in a record-breaking year for the paper.
Staff editors, contributors and the paper itself have been nominated across 15 categories, including nominations for Newspaper of the Year and Website of the Year.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to see Trinity News receive so many nominations at the national student media awards” Editor-in-Chief David Wolfe said.
“We have continued to increase our number of nominations, beating last year’s record, and I’m extraordinarily proud of our staff.”
Trinity News writers and photographers have been nominated across a wide array of categories ranging from news and features to sport and travel.
The paper has dominated the category for Features Writer of the Year in News & Current Affairs, with Deputy Editor Stephen Conneely and Deputy Features Editors Ruby Murphy and Hazel Mulkeen all receiving nominations.
Three members of staff have been nominated for photography, with Head Videographer Neasa Nic Corcráin up for Photographer of the Year, Lorenzo Cheasty for News Photographer of the Year, and Shannyn Corcoran for Sports Photographer of the Year.
Life Editor Kate Byrne and Investigations Editor Faye Madden have been nominated for Journalist of the Year.
Byrne has also been nominated for the European Commission Award for Journalism Relating to European Issues and Madden for Journalism Relating to Health.
Digital Content Creator Emily Haughton has been nominated for the Research Ireland Award for Journalism Relating to Science and Technology.
Sports Editor Matthew Keeley has been nominated for Sports Writer of the Year.
TN also received three nominations in the Iriseoireacht trí Gaeilge – Scríofa (Written Journalism in Irish) category for Gaeilge Editor Tara Ní Bhroin, and writers Meadhbh Ní Cheallacháin and Niamh Leddy.
Social Media Manager Aoibhínn Clancy and Food & Drink Co-Editor Libby Marchant have been nominated for Features Writer of the Year – Arts & Pop Culture.
News Analysis Co-Editor Conor Healy has been nominated for Journalism Relating to Travel.
“For our entire staff, journalism is a hobby, not a degree subject, so it’s amazing to see them do so well in highly competitive categories agaist full-time media students,” Wolfe added.
“It’s a testament to their own impressive dedication to their work, and the great culture of mentorship we have at Trinity News” he concluded.
Wolfe is nominated for Editor of the Year.
The award ceremony will take place in the Mansion House on Wednesday, April 9.
