The restoration of Trinity College’s iconic front gate after it was damaged last year cost just under €45,000, according to a report in today’s Herald.
The College Green entrance was repaired in June by Dunwoody and Dobson, a Dublin-based heritage building company, after being struck by a car on the morning of April 2nd.
The craftsmen sourced matching timber to replace the damaged sections of the gate and replaced the original door frames with oak posts made to the same design.
The paper reports that the repair cost a total of €44,738.77, which College is hoping will be reimbursed by insurance.
The damage to the gate was originally only estimated to be €43,816, with a further €18,000 worth of damage to other College property and nearby vehicles allegedly having been caused by the crash.
John Farrell, a 66-year-old Dublin man, was charged with damaging the gate on October 1st.
Mr. Farrell is due to appear before Dublin District Court again tomorrow.
He faces 21 charges including allegations of criminal damage, endangerment of life, dangerous driving and hit-and-run in relation to the incident.
