Body and Soul Week

With Body and Soul week approaching, Laura Grady gives the highlights of the week ahead

Body and Soul week offers a chance to bring together societies and bodies in college, who are all working towards the aim of promoting self-confidence and boosting self-esteem.

This week the Student Union is running Body and Soul Week, a campaign dedicated to building self-confidence and self-esteem, celebrating ourselves, and defying self-doubt. The week is filled with events, from the Puppy Room in the SU Kitchen on Monday, to DU Gender Equality Society event with Carina Fitzpatrick from the “Free the Nipple” campaign on Thursday in the GSU Common Room. Throughout the week there will be stands in the Arts Block, the Hamilton, D’Olier Street, and St. James’ giving out information, free hot chocolate, and more.

Body and Soul Week was created in 2014 by Trinity student Shauna Watson, and has been a huge success in the years following its formation. The campaign focuses on defying self doubt and building self confidence in college students, who have been shown to suffer significantly from these issues, and runs with the understanding that a person’s self-esteem plays a hugely important role in maintaining mental health. Body and Soul week offers a chance to bring together societies and bodies in college, who are all working towards the aim of promoting self-confidence and boosting self-esteem.

Some of the main events to look forward to are Yóga as Gaeilge on Monday at 5pm in Seomra na Gaeilge and a free gig by the DU Comedy Soc in the Pav on Wednesday at 7pm.  The Hist is joining together with the SU to run a discussion called Skin Deep, where the floor will be opened up to students to contribute in any form they want – give a speech, read a poem, anything that makes them most comfortable. The Phil is giving a public speaking workshop on Monday at 3pm in Room 4.03 in Aras an Phiarsaigh, and on Wednesday at 7pm, students will have the chance to learn sean-nós dancing with Traditional Society in the Dance Studio in the Sports Centre, followed by free ice cream from Murphy’s and a silent “Trisco” in Whelans.

The importance of campaigns like this in college can not be denied, and with huge numbers of volunteers swarming the campus in Body and Soul t-shirts and loads of societies running events, the week is sure to be filled with excitement from beginning to end.
