A Vigil to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Savita Halappanavar’s death will take place in Front Square tonight at 6pm.
The Vigil, organised by Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) and the Repeal Project, will be held as part of repeal day.
Ivana Bacik, Senator and Professor of Law at Trinity will speak at the vigil; along with Repeal Project founder and Trinity alumnus, Anna Cosgrave; former President of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) Annie Hoey; and Convenor for the Coalition to Repeal the 8th amendment, Ailbhe Smyth.
Following the speeches, violinist Devin O’Shea Farrell will play a recital.
“We believe it’s extremely important that the student voice is added to the national remembrance of Savita, and we hope to do that on Thursday,” said TCDSU President Kevin Keane and TCDSU Communications and Marketing officer, Una Harty in a press statement.
Savita Halappanaver died of septicemia in University Hospital Galway in 2012 following the hospital’s refusal to terminate the pregnancy, despite the fact that she was miscarrying, as there was a foetal heartbeat.
