A new 255 bed student accommodation complex has been proposed for University College Cork (UCC) on its Victoria Cross site. It will consist of four linked blocks, which will between eight and ten storeys high. The close-to-campus student accommodation is part of UCC’s strategic plan for 2017-2020.
The site, which was acquired by UCC from a private developer last year, is located west of the main UCC campus. It will be located beside multiple accommodation blocks which have been purchased by UCC in the past, with certain sections already accommodating 300 students over nine storeys.
Aside from the 255 bed spaces, the accommodation will include student facilities, public cafés and a health and wealth centre. The project will also require architectural work and landscaping.
The plans for the multi-million euro project will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála as it qualified for rapid planning consideration under new strategic housing development (SHD) terms. If approved, a number of terraced houses and the site of the Crow’s Nest Pub will be demolished in preparation for the development.
According to the Irish Examiner, UCC stated: “The proposed building will rejuvenate this important site, which has been derelict in recent years…this proposal seeks to address some of this demand in a high quality, purpose-built facility.”
